Alex Smith's Journey




2004-Smith graduates from Niagara-Wheatfield

2004-2006-Smith is the starting quarterback for his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons at Cortland.

2006- In the sixth game of the season versus Western Connecticut State, Smith sustains a season-ending ACL tear in his right knee.

2007- In the first game of the 2007 season, Smith suffers a second ACL tear in his right knee, ending his season.

2008- Smith attempts a comeback but opts to become a volunteer assistant coach for the Red Dragons.

Spring 2009- Smith becomes an official graduate assistant coach for wide receivers and kick returners for the Red Dragons.

Sept 19, 2009- Starting quarterback Dan Pitcher suffers a season-ending knee injury in the Red Dragon’s game against Rowan.

Sept. 2009- Smith begins the process of applying to the NCAA for a remaining semester of eligibility.

Oct. 3, 2009- Smith receives word that he is eligible to play.

Oct. 10, 2009- Smith plays in his first football game since 2007, making an appearance in Cortland’s 16-7 loss to Montclair State.

Oct. 17, 2009- Smith starts his first game since 2007, a 35-6 win over Western Connecticut State. He completed 3 of 7 passes for 51 yards.

Oct. 2009-Nov. 2009- Smith leads the Red Dragons to four straight wins over Western Connecticut State, William Patterson, the College of New Jersey and Brockport. The Red Dragons lost their final two games of the season, a 23-20 loss to Ithaca College in the Cortaca Jug game and a 34-20 loss to St. John Fisher in the ECAC Division 3 Northwest Bowl.

Nov. 21, 2009-Smith officially plays his last game as a Red Dragon. He finishes his career tied for the school’s career touchdown passes record with 48.
